Early Childhood Teacher Assistant – Part Time

Position Summary:

Glenelg Country School is a coeducational independent school located in Howard County, Maryland and has approximately eight hundred students 2-year-old through twelfth grade.  GCS offers a competitive salary including a full benefit package. 

Typical Education and Experience:

This position is an excellent opportunity for new educators interested in strengthening their professional skill set and who are enthusiastic about teaching students in a Lower School setting. Our program is a state-licensed program, so teachers must complete a minimum of 12 hours or more of continued training per year to maintain licensing requirements along with CPR/First Aid training and other required training. Bachelor’s degree in education is preferred.

 

Salary Range: $28,875 – $39,380 per year

 

Overview of essential functions:

 

The Early Childhood Teacher will assist the lead teacher in supporting and nurturing the development of each child’s self-esteem, trust, and growing autonomy. To help assess children’s different and personal needs, temperament styles, and abilities. A TA needs to support the classroom team to plan and implement lesson plan activities and developmentally appropriate experiences. As well as attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, parent meetings, conferences, in-service training, and other meetings as directed.

 

Licensed Childcare Requirements

  1. Additional required qualifications include: first aid and CPR certified, 90-hour preschool and 45-hour infant toddler classes and an associate or bachelor’s degree candidates is preferred.

  2. Must submit a medical form per Maryland State.

 

Teaching Team- Collaboration

 

Collaboration with colleagues to develop engaging learning experiences, using data to enhance teaching and learning, and setting individual learning goals are key responsibilities. A positive and restorative approach to student needs is expected, along with engaging parents through clear communication about curriculum and individual student progress. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

This role requires creating a safe, collaborative learning environment aligned with the school’s focus on equity. The candidate should be adaptable, innovative, and able to solve problems effectively. A strong understanding of diversity is essential, as is experience in teaching a diverse student body with culturally and historically relevant methods. Effective communication and the ability to modify teaching styles to suit unique needs are important.

Teaching- Implementation

Understanding of early childhood development, commitment to standards-based assessment, and familiarity with positive behavior interventions are required. The candidate should be adept at using technology in an educational setting and committed to ongoing professional development. Experience with Creative Curriculum is desirable.

  • Ability to participate in Professional Development and Curriculum Implementation- Recognizes the importance of learning and motivates others by own enthusiasm. Must independently participate in training for licensing certification. Must be able to implement curriculum including technological implementation.

  • Time Management Skills – Manages a class of sixteen students with the help of another adult. Must be able to assist small children with projects while maintaining the daily schedule. Maintains work/life balance without compromising expectations of others. Respected for ability to “find” or “make” time to get things done.

  • Organizational Skills – Creates action plans to meet divisional goals and objectives. Must be able to gather, organize and support lessons daily.

  • Communications Skills –Must be able to reply to emails or texts in a timely manner. The Teacher must have excellent student and family service skills, including excellent oral and written communication skills, high levels of empathy and patience, and a sense of humor.

  • Written Communication Skills – Must be able to participate in email, text, and phone calls. Effectively communicates with faculty, students, administration, or families.

Administration

All prospective employees must be able to clear background checks, as required by the State of Maryland. All Early Childhood Employees need to meet the standards according to the State of Maryland Childcare Licensing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to listen, physically direct, and speak. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus with screens, white boards, printed material, and ability to see children in detail. The employee must be able to lift at least thirty pounds. The employee is also regularly required to climb two flights of stairs.
