Early Childhood Music Teacher

Title: Lead Music Teacher- 2 year olds-1st Grade

Glenelg Country School is a non-sectarian, co-educational, college preparatory school serving students from age 2 through grade 12 on 90-acre campus just minutes from Columbia, MD, with approximately 800 students.

Typical Education and Experience: 

A bachelor’s degree in music education, early childhood education, or a related field is required. A master’s degree would be advantageous. State or national certification in music education or early childhood education is desirable. Previous teaching experience with early childhood or elementary-aged children is crucial. Experience in a classroom or music education setting is preferred. 

 

Overview of essential functions:  

  • Ability to play and teach various musical instruments, especially those suitable for young children, such as piano, guitar, or percussion instruments. 
  • Strong singing ability to lead songs and teach vocal techniques to children. 
  • Solid understanding of music theory, composition, and various teaching methods tailored to young learners. 
  • Plan and coordinate with the music department on concerts, musicals and performances as needed.  
  • Ability to conduct a vocal concert of young children for families.

  • Creativity in lesson planning and the ability to adapt lessons to meet the needs and interests of young children. 
  • Knowledge of child development theories and practices, such as the Reggio Emilia Approach.

  • Ability to participate in Professional Development and Curriculum Implementation – Recognizes the importance of learning and motivates others by own enthusiasm.   Must be able to implement integrated arts lessons.  
  • Time Management Skills: Conducts small groups or individual differentiated groups and provides whole group lessons.  Planning time is given to plan engaging, effective, and differentiated lessons regularly.  
  • Organizational Skills – Plans implementation of curriculum, conferences, and reports.  Must be able to gather, organize, and track growth data and apply it to instructional goals for students.  
  • Communications Skills –Must be able to reply to emails or texts promptly. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and high levels of empathy and patience. 
  • Written Communication Skills – Must be able to participate in email, text, and phone calls. Effectively communicates with faculty, students, administration, or families.

The employee must be able to lift at least thirty pounds. The employee is also regularly required to climb two flights of stairs.
