Upper School Librarian

Glenelg Country School has an opening for an Upper School Librarian, beginning August 2023. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic librarian who seeks to foster a love of learning in students and faculty. This candidate would also be able to oversee the physical space of the Upper School Library, manage print and electronic collections, and support teachers in research skills and curriculum development. Along with overseeing the Library, contributing to the co-curricular life of the school is an integral part of the teacher’s role in our community through involvement in Glenelg’s advisory program. A desire to teach one section of Senior Integrative Seminar, Glenelg’s capstone research course, is desirable. This position reports to the Head of the Upper School and coordinates efforts with librarians in other divisions. 

The Upper School Librarian will…

  • Maintain and develop a relevant, useful, and interesting collection of print and electronic materials and research databases to support the GCS Mission Statement.

  • Oversee and maintain the physical spaces of the Library

  • Be a resource for teachers to help with curriculum development and teaching research skills

  • Manage the Library budget

  • Possess strong communication skills, a patient and thorough understanding of adolescence and the ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues.

  • Track and maintain the Upper School’s audio-visual equipment, as well as provide access and support for AV/Tech to the Upper School community.

  • Provide basic assistance to students and faculty with academic technology.

  • Teach the Upper School’s capstone research course, Senior Integrative Seminar.

  • Foster a love of reading with students and faculty

  • Serve as a faculty advisor to a group of 8-10 students

  • Perform other Upper School duties such as Forum Duty, Lunch Duty, advising student clubs, etc.

  • Contribute to student life by chaperoning two weekend or after-school student activities per year

  • Ensure that the Library is an inviting environment in which students grow in their ability to work and interact together. 

Qualifications:     

  • B.A. degree or equivalent – Master’s degree in Library or Information Science desirable

  • Prior experience working in a library setting

  • Prior experience working with children in a school

  • GCS seeks candidates who will contribute to and are committed to diversity and multicultural educational practices. Demonstrated ability working in a diverse community is essential.
