Lead Art Teacher – Grades 2-5

Reports To: Head of Lower School  

FLSA Status: Nonexempt 

 

Position Summary: 

Glenelg Country School is a coeducational independent school located in Howard County, Maryland has approximately eight hundred students, 2-year-old through twelfth grade.  GCS offers a competitive salary including a full benefit package.   

 

Typical Education and Experience: 

A bachelor’s degree in education with a specialty in art is required with a dual teaching certification/degree preferred. The candidate’s coursework should include art, art history and the basics of design, developmental classes, computer classes, and basic teaching methodology. A minimum of 3 years’ experience in an elementary classroom is preferred.  

 

Overview of Essential Functions:  

  • Showcase their own work and allow students to do the same.  

  • Able to teach students basic techniques and encourage them to take the techniques further. 

  • Must be encouraging and able to inspire students to practice skills that may be uncomfortable at first. 

  • Should be well versed in visual and graphic arts to allow students to explore different mediums. 

  • Perform duties to keep students safe, such as hallway or bus monitoring, take attendance, monitor student behavior, create lesson plans, and grade assignments.  

  • Plan and implement an art show in the spring of a year’s worth of work for families and students. 

  • Display artwork throughout the building as a rotating installation.  

  • Work collaboratively with art department schoolwide.  

  • Team teaching with homeroom teachers 

  • Order art supplies for teachers to use in their classrooms. 

  •  Additional responsibilities include regular faculty meetings, the supervision of students during faculty duties, lunch, recess, and dismissal. 

 

Key Skills and Attributes: 

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, practical oral and communication skills, and experience working with cooperative and differentiated instruction. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience with art history, multimedia, graphic design, and project-based learning. A key skill needed is integrating the arts with core subject areas including technology. An ideal candidate would be able to celebrate the creative talents of all artists regardless of the skill of the student.

Requires strong interaction with all School divisions and departments.

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies: 

  • Ability to participate in Professional Development and Curriculum Implementation- Recognizes the importance of learning and motivates others by own enthusiasm.   Must be able to implement arts integrated lessons.  

  • Time Management Skills – Conducts small group or individual differentiated groups in addition to providing whole group lessons.  Planning time is given to plan engaging, effective, and differentiated lessons regularly.  

  • Organizational Skills – Plans implementation of curriculum, conferences, and reports.  Must be able to gather, organize, and track growth data and apply it to instructional goals for students.  

  • Communications Skills –Must be able to reply to emails or texts promptly. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and high levels of empathy and patience. 

  • Written Communication Skills – Must be able to participate in email, text, and phone calls. Effectively communicates with faculty, students, administration, or families.

The employee is required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, compute, handle, clean spills, tie shoe, zipper coats or feel and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus with screens, white boards, printed material, and ability to see children in detail. The employee must be able to lift at least thirty pounds. The employee is also regularly required to climb two flights of stairs.
