Lead STEAM Teacher- Grades 2-5

Glenelg Country School (GCS), a coeducational independent institution situated in Howard County, Maryland, serves a diverse student body of approximately eight hundred individuals, ranging from 2-year-olds to twelfth graders. GCS is dedicated to fostering a learning environment that emphasizes Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education for grades 2 through 5. This position seeks a passionate and dynamic Lead STEAM Teacher who is committed to delivering an integrated curriculum that encourages students to explore and excel in STEAM fields. 

Typical Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, with a specific focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, or Mathematics. A master’s degree is desired. 

  • At least 3-5 years of teaching experience, preferably with a focus on STEAM subjects. 

  • Experience in curriculum development and implementation of integrated STEAM programs. 

  • Proficiency in using technology as an educational tool. 

 

Overview of essential functions: 

 

  • Design, develop, and implement an engaging and innovative STEAM curriculum for grades 2 through 5. 

  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and suitable for the physical, social, and emotional development of students. 

  • Collaborate with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues. 

  • Manage Bring Your Own Device program for grades 2-5. 

  • Serve as Lower School Tech coordinator for division. 

  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports. 

  • Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

  • Time Management Skills – Effectively balances small group, individual, and whole group instruction. Consistently plan engaging, differentiated lessons. 

  • Organizational Skills – Efficiently manages curriculum planning, student conferences, and report writing. Tracks and utilizes student growth data for setting instructional goals. 

  • Communications Skills – Maintains open, empathetic and effective communication with faculty, students, administration, and families through various channels. 

  • Written Communication Skills – Must be able to participate in email, text, and phone calls. Effectively communicates with faculty, students, administration, or families.  

Administration 

All prospective employees must be able to clear background checks, as required by the State of Maryland.  

Physical Demands: 

This role requires regular standing, walking, and the use of hands for various classroom activities. Must be capable of lifting at least thirty pounds and climbing stairs. Vision abilities include close and distance vision for a variety of educational materials and student observation. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to listen, physically direct, and speak. The employee is required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, compute, handle, clean spills, tie shoe, zipper coats or feel and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus with screens, white boards, printed material, and ability to see children in detail. The employee must be able to lift at least thirty pounds. The employee is also regularly required to climb two flights of stairs.
