Library Assistant

Position Summary

The Library Assistant supports the daily operations across two school libraries – one serving early learners (ages 2 – Kindergarten) and the other serving elementary students (grades 1-5). The ideal candidate will foster a welcoming library environment, assist students and staff, and help maintain organized, engaging collections tailored to young readers.  This position reports to the Lower School Head.

 

Essential Functions

  • Assist students and teachers in locating books and resources appropriate for different reading levels.
  • Manage circulation, including checking materials in and out and shelving books in their proper sections.
  • Support early literacy by engaging with younger students through storytime, interactive reading, and hands-on activities.
  • Help maintain an organized and inviting library space suitable for young children and elementary students.
  • Process new books, including cataloging, labeling, and repairing damaged materials.
  • Assist students with basic research skills and digital learning tools.
  • Encourage a love of reading by recommending books based on student interests and grade levels.
  • Supervise students during library visits and help reinforce positive library behaviors.
  • Support teachers with library resources, classroom reading programs, and material requests.
  • Assist in planning and running special literacy events, book fairs, and reading programs.
  • Perform other administrative tasks, such as updating records, organizing displays, and assisting with inventory management.

Education and Experience Needs

  • Associate’s degree required, Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience working with children in an educational or library setting is highly desirable.

 

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with computers, library management systems, and digital learning tools.
  • Ability to create an engaging and supportive environment for young learners.
  • Patience, enthusiasm, and a passion for early childhood and elementary literacy.

Compensation Range: $20.00 – $22.00 per hour. This position works 32 hours per week. GCS offers a robust benefits package including health insurances, retirement plan, and generous leave and holidays.
