The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is designed to equip high school students with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to become outstanding camp counselors while developing valuable leadership and life skills. Participants engage in a combination of hands-on training and real-world experiences, working alongside campers, counselors, and fellow CITs throughout the two-week program.

CITs spend time assisting camp counselors as additional support in various camp programs, helping lead activities, engaging with campers, and learning effective leadership techniques. They also participate in games and activities with each camp group, allowing them to build relationships with campers while gaining practical experience in camp operations.

As part of the program, CITs participate in a team-bonding field trip on the final Thursday of the session, providing an opportunity to strengthen friendships, develop teamwork skills, and celebrate their accomplishments.

Program Levels

Level I CIT

  • Focuses on foundational leadership skills.
  • Introduces concepts of child development, health and safety, camper engagement, and classroom management.
  • Provides opportunities to practice leadership and teamwork in a camp setting.

Level II CIT

  • Provides a more immersive, hands-on leadership experience.
  • Includes observation, mentoring, and direct implementation of camp activities.
  • Offers opportunities to shadow camp instructors and counselors.
  • Successful completion of the program with a satisfactory evaluation qualifies participants for a $50 stipend.

Enrollment in the CIT Program is an excellent opportunity to gain practical leadership experience, build confidence, and develop skills that can be applied in future educational, volunteer, and employment settings. While successful participation may strengthen future employment opportunities, enrollment in the CIT Program does not guarantee future employment with Glenelg Country School.
