Champions of Courage Winner is Glenelg Country Student
Danielle Peterson
Last week, Fox45 News in Baltimore aired their annual “Saluting Maryland’s Champions of Courage” special. Entering its 37th year, Champions of Courage is designed to commemorate Black History Month by celebrating positive role models for youth. The essay contest allows students to participate in scholastic competition, gain confidence in their abilities, and be recognized for their achievements, while the broadcast honors student essayists and those who carry on the journey for justice, opportunity, and respect for every member of our community.
This year, Ayla Walsh ’25, a junior in the Upper School, was one of 15 student finalists selected to record her essay in the newsroom. Her essay aired on CW Baltimore, Fox45, and MyTV throughout the weekend. After all student essays aired, three students were honored as top finalists. Walsh, whose essay focused on Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the US Supreme Court, earned first-place honors. She will receive a cash prize, and in her honor, Glenelg Country School will also receive an award.
