Making Perfect Tortillas

Danielle Peterson

Tortillas balls are placed on a table in front of students.

The tortilla is a common food for many people. So before winter break, Sonja Davis, a world cultures teacher in the Lower School, invited a special guest into her Kindergarten classroom. Lucy Ventura, a native of El Salvador who works in Operations, joined Davis’ classes to teach students how to make homemade tortillas. Gathered in the Primary Building’s kitchen for the demonstration, students learned about the ingredients necessary to create the perfect tortilla. Each kindergartener then made their own tortilla following Ventura’s instruction. Topped with cheese and beans, students enjoyed a fresh snack. Though some hesitated to try the beans, it took only one person to try before others joined in. The result? One student declared the tortillas “better than Chipotle!”
