STEAM Challenge Breaks the Ice
Danielle Peterson
The first day of school, especially after more than a year since an entire division has been together, can be a nerve-racking experience. In Mrs. Annette Kelly’s Upper School Biology class, students completed a STEAM challenge to break the ice: building spaghetti and marshmallow towers. The objective of the lab is simple. Each group constructs a tower that will support one large marshmallow at the top. The group that builds the highest free-standing tower wins the competition. And the point of the challenge? It challenge allows students to explore the design process: thinking, doing, prototyping, and iteration. This last point, iteration, may be the most important.
