An Educator’s Week with the Audubon Society
Danielle Peterson
Earlier this month, Upper School science teacher Annette Kelly attended Audubon Educator’s Week on Hog Island, Maine, a program that has inspired teachers since 1936. The week brought together educators from across the country to explore environmental education, ecology, and new ways to engage students in nature.
Kelly immersed herself in the unique ecology and geology of Midcoast Maine through activities such as seaweed pressing, cyanoprinting, nature journaling, birding, intertidal exploration, and hiking around the island. A highlight was a boat tour to Eastern Egg Rock to see the restored puffin colony, made possible through Project Puffin, founded by Stephen Kress, who also delivered a lecture on seabird conservation.
She also participated in workshops on equitable environmental education and incorporating citizen science projects into the classroom. Her time at Audubon Educator’s Week Hog Island gave her new strategies to connect Glenelg Country School students with the natural world, inspiring them to study ecology, conservation, and their role as environmental stewards.
