Students Mix It Up at Lunch

Lower School students enjoy lunch during Mix It Up day in the Manor House.

Glenelg Country School students joined more than one million students worldwide by participating in the annual Mix It Up at Lunch Day. The event, launched by the Learning for Justice’s Teaching Tolerance project in 2002, encourages students to sit with someone new in the cafeteria for one day but to incorporate the day into yearlong efforts to promote a healthy school climate. Cafeterias are the focus of Mix It Up because that’s where a school’s social boundaries are most apparent. So, on October 14, Lower and Middle School students were challenged to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch. It’s a simple act with profound implications. Pre-K and Kindergarten students participated in a classroom lunchtime swap, visiting a different classroom and mingling with other students. While students in the Manor House mixed it up with classmates in the cafeteria, Middle School students enjoyed the day outside socializing with new friends.
